Manabu Sumi

Manabu Sumi has worked in Japan’s public health and global health arena over several decades. Currently, he serves as Director, Regional Healthcare Planning Division, Health Policy Bureau, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the position he has held since September 2021.


Prior to taking this position, he was engaged in public health affairs in the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, which involved the revision of the medical payment system, food safety, mental health, environmental health, health promotion and global health. He has also served as Director of Cancer Control Office (2011), Director of Office of International food (2012), Counselor of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations (2014), Director of Global Health Policy Division of MOFA (2017) and Director of Health Service Division (2020).


He received both medical and doctoral degrees from Nagoya University, and a master’s degree from Harvard School of Public Health.
